Aby Warburg's Bilderatlas Mnemosyne is his unfinished practice of pinning images to black cloth, combining them not by subject but by recurring structure and form. He called these "pathos formulas," and through them he looked for shapes that go dormant, shapes which, when brought together with new images, resurface and create patterns among otherwise unrelated images.
Through Bilderatlas I looked to turn this method inward, onto a personal archive rather than art history's canon. Sorting through thousands of photographs, I looked for where my intuition placed images together, finding formal and informal patterns through recurrence. The collection stayed provisional, closer to a working atlas than a finished taxonomy.
